National Doughnut (Donut) Day
The first friday in June is National Doughnut Day. The holiday began in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. The Salvation Army provided food to soldiers during World War I and helped ease hunger during the Great Depression. The purpose now is probably to get you to go into Dunkin Donuts and buy something.
Do we really need a National Doughnut Day? What are your thoughts?

I think doughnut day is funny. I think doughnut day is good especially since what it orginally started as in the first place.
June 7th, 2009 at 6:46 am
well i agree with why it was started, i mean it was help out during the first world war and that was tough time for every one and so was the great depression, so it was a good purpose..but now in our days, i dont think its really neccessiary to have a “donut”day in our days because it doesn’t realy have a purpose anymore i believe unless they still do the fundraiseing.
June 7th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
i love donuts so yeah i think its worth it i mean why not its not like there is any thing else happening on that day
June 7th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
i support donut day 100%. i love donuts. they are the best dessert and its about time they get a little praise for tasting so good.
June 9th, 2009 at 10:34 am
i dont think we need a national donut day is kinda stupid to waste time when now days people are so busy. people should get better ideas for holidayss
June 9th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
I think this is really cool. dounuts are great and its got a good reason so its not just a random thing.
June 10th, 2009 at 10:03 am
I think its really cool having a national doughnut day. It really brightened my day up. I was walking down the hall when i heard some on say it an i was like wow i want a dougnut now. So i went home an had one. But In America we should have a lot more weird holidays like this one just for fun…
June 10th, 2009 at 11:10 am
i think that it had a good cause when it first came out. but now it kind of sounds ridiculous. we already have a bad economy i dont think our money needs to be spent towards a day of donuts.
June 10th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
well i love doghnuts and everytthing…but come on they say america is most obese country..i wonder why haha. i would enjoy thought to have national dougnut day
June 11th, 2009 at 8:07 pm
i think its stupid to have a national donut day. what a waste of a day like honestly.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
i think its a waste of time and pointles but also kinda cool cause i like donuts
June 11th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
I think it is dumb because 1st of all… i hate donuts, basically all types of cakes i dont like except for ice cream cake!!! Second of all i have never heard of this holiday so it will probably stop sometime soon.
June 12th, 2009 at 7:07 am
they say that there trying to make America healthier and then go want a national donuts day. are they out of there minds. plus its a pointless holiday
June 12th, 2009 at 7:38 am
NOO! we dont need a national doughnut day its waste of time and people should think of better holidays that will benefit the whole country.
June 12th, 2009 at 10:59 am
I think its not needed. But who cares. We should just keep it anyway because it was started for a good reason & Why change it noW?
June 12th, 2009 at 11:12 am
I think its fine to have a national donut day especially since it was for the cause on how it started.
June 13th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
i agree that we should have a holiday with donuts becuase we keeo the tradtion becuase back then people couildnt afford it. It would very nice to remeber the nice things that has had happen
June 15th, 2009 at 9:16 am
It came about for good purposes so lets just keep it. Besides national donut day could be cool.
June 16th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
I think it started off with good intentions, but now its unnecessary.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
i never knew that there was a national doughnut day. it is a good excuse for buying doughnuts and is a very good tradition.
October 1st, 2009 at 7:47 pm
I don’t think that we need national doughnut day but its not harming anyone actually having one around. I bet that most people don’t even know that it exists and if nothing else it is helping people so why not. Maybe we can have a national pizza hut day or something for the people in Iraq ha
October 25th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
No because people buy doughnut everyday
November 5th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
i think that doughnut day isnt neccasery anymore. it was a very good idea back then for the great depression but we dont need it anymore.
November 5th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
I think this is important but i dont think it should be a national holiday. Compared to other events, this doesn\’t really compare.
November 5th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
I think this is important but i dont think it should be a national holiday. Compared to other events, this doesn\’t really compare
November 10th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
I do not think a national doughnut day is nesscary. I think it is just someone\’s excuse to have a reason to eat doughnuts.
December 7th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
I think national donut day is a good idea i mean who dosent love donuts.
December 21st, 2009 at 4:01 pm
i dont think its neccesary to have a national doughnut day because people go to dunkin doughnuts all the time to get doughnuts. so i dont think there should be one day where everyone goes and gets doughnuts
January 19th, 2010 at 2:55 pm
i dont think we need a national donut day. in todays world donuts have no relavence that would need it to be recignized. back then it was a great idea, but now it most likely is publisized to promote Dunkin Donuts.
January 21st, 2010 at 9:48 pm
America already has an obesity problem, why encourage more? National Doughnut Day was founded on a good cause, but in these times, it\’s not good to encourage eating unhealthy foods. I feel it\’s unnecessary.
January 25th, 2010 at 7:13 pm
I completely agree with what was started. It was a really good idea for a fund raiser and it can also give people a good laugh. The salvation arm does deserve this day.
February 3rd, 2010 at 3:08 pm
I think that doughnut day unnecessary. It may have been started for good intentions but at this point in time I dont think it is necessary.
February 3rd, 2010 at 4:04 pm
i think national doughnut day is funny. I also think it was a good idea to start it to raise money for the salvation army. Even though this is a national holiday i dont think it is as important as other holidays. I have never heard of it until today.
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:57 pm
I don’t think this is a nesscary holiday but who wouldn’t like a doughnut now and agian. But a whole day for doughnuts is a little extream.
February 3rd, 2010 at 6:00 pm
I think National donut day can still be used to bring food to our armies fighting in war right now. The food/money can go to our army.
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:22 pm
I dont think that doughnut day is a good idea. This is because there are many other important things that happened in this workd that should be acknowledged and have their own day.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:31 pm
I think national doughnut day shouldn’t be a national holiday, it’s understandable on how it was started but now its just to fundraise for Dunkin’ Doughnuts and doesn’t really help anyone. Most people would think of it as just a funny holiday and not what it was really made for.
February 5th, 2010 at 11:13 am
I dont think national doughnut day should be a holiday. Doughnuts aren’t important at all. Its basically raising money for dougnut companies like Dunkin Doughnuts. I think it is a bad holiday and should be cancelled.
February 11th, 2010 at 3:11 pm
I don\’t think this is neccessarily needed. . Of course, when it was truely needed in World War 1 and served a purpose i could understand it. . Now, it tottaly uneccessary.
February 23rd, 2010 at 1:01 pm
I think its important, but i don’t think that it should be made a national holiday, because there are more important things going on in the America and there is no need to make a national doughnut day.
March 30th, 2010 at 11:35 am
it started off for a good cause but then people started taking advantage of it and ruined it for everyone else
April 15th, 2010 at 8:45 pm
i agree with the reason that it started. however i am opposed to why it is still continuing. i think that in todays society there are way to many people that are overweight. national doughnut is not necessary because of that reason. why cant we have a national apple day or something? Also it still doesn’t hold its original meaning. Therefor its not a good holiday.
June 7th, 2010 at 6:12 pm
Back when it started off for an actual good cause to it is something i\’d agree with, but now just people taking it too far and taking advantage of what it was is just not okay, it\’s unnecessary to make this a national holiday when much more can be happening for the world.
June 13th, 2010 at 12:20 pm
i love donuts and all but why would they do that after people saying were all obese and everything..
