National Doughnut (Donut) Day

The first friday in June is National Doughnut Day. The holiday began in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. The Salvation Army provided food to soldiers during World War I and helped ease hunger during the Great Depression. The purpose now is probably to get you to go into Dunkin Donuts and buy something.

Do we really need a National Doughnut Day? What are your thoughts?

well i agree with why it was started, i mean it was help out during the first world war and that was tough time for every one and so was the great depression, so it was a good purpose..but now in our days, i dont think its really neccessiary to have a “donut”day in our days because it doesn’t realy have a purpose anymore i believe unless they still do the fundraiseing.

I think its really cool having a national doughnut day. It really brightened my day up. I was walking down the hall when i heard some on say it an i was like wow i want a dougnut now. So i went home an had one. But In America we should have a lot more weird holidays like this one just for fun…

  8. skyee Says:

i think that it had a good cause when it first came out. but now it kind of sounds ridiculous. we already have a bad economy i dont think our money needs to be spent towards a day of donuts.

  21. Brandon B Says:

I don’t think that we need national doughnut day but its not harming anyone actually having one around. I bet that most people don’t even know that it exists and if nothing else it is helping people so why not. Maybe we can have a national pizza hut day or something for the people in Iraq ha

  22. Alex Vetere Says:

No because people buy doughnut everyday

I think this is important but i dont think it should be a national holiday. Compared to other events, this doesn\’t really compare.

  25. Robin Says:

I think this is important but i dont think it should be a national holiday. Compared to other events, this doesn\’t really compare

  26. Christina Staffu Says:

I do not think a national doughnut day is nesscary. I think it is just someone\’s excuse to have a reason to eat doughnuts.

  27. patrick mckiernan Says:

I think national donut day is a good idea i mean who dosent love donuts.

  28. adam montesinos Says:

i dont think its neccesary to have a national doughnut day because people go to dunkin doughnuts all the time to get doughnuts. so i dont think there should be one day where everyone goes and gets doughnuts

  29. KBraca Says:

i dont think we need a national donut day. in todays world donuts have no relavence that would need it to be recignized. back then it was a great idea, but now it most likely is publisized to promote Dunkin Donuts.

  30. Nikole Castro Says:

America already has an obesity problem, why encourage more? National Doughnut Day was founded on a good cause, but in these times, it\’s not good to encourage eating unhealthy foods. I feel it\’s unnecessary.

  31. Steven Reiche Says:

I completely agree with what was started. It was a really good idea for a fund raiser and it can also give people a good laugh. The salvation arm does deserve this day.

  32. samantha gencarelli Says:

I think that doughnut day unnecessary. It may have been started for good intentions but at this point in time I dont think it is necessary.

  33. carmela rigaglia Says:

i think national doughnut day is funny. I also think it was a good idea to start it to raise money for the salvation army. Even though this is a national holiday i dont think it is as important as other holidays. I have never heard of it until today.

  34. Amelia Says:

I don’t think this is a nesscary holiday but who wouldn’t like a doughnut now and agian. But a whole day for doughnuts is a little extream.

  35. Allison Spedaliere Says:

I think National donut day can still be used to bring food to our armies fighting in war right now. The food/money can go to our army.

  36. gabriela miceli Says:

I dont think that doughnut day is a good idea. This is because there are many other important things that happened in this workd that should be acknowledged and have their own day.

  37. Alyssa Miraglia Says:

I think national doughnut day shouldn’t be a national holiday, it’s understandable on how it was started but now its just to fundraise for Dunkin’ Doughnuts and doesn’t really help anyone. Most people would think of it as just a funny holiday and not what it was really made for.

  38. Ferdinand Trashaj Says:

I dont think national doughnut day should be a holiday. Doughnuts aren’t important at all. Its basically raising money for dougnut companies like Dunkin Doughnuts. I think it is a bad holiday and should be cancelled.

  39. Robin Says:

I don\’t think this is neccessarily needed. . Of course, when it was truely needed in World War 1 and served a purpose i could understand it. . Now, it tottaly uneccessary.

  40. Jacquin Chiriguayo Says:

I think its important, but i don’t think that it should be made a national holiday, because there are more important things going on in the America and there is no need to make a national doughnut day.

  41. Frank DeMuro Says:

it started off for a good cause but then people started taking advantage of it and ruined it for everyone else

  42. Zack Galper Says:

i agree with the reason that it started. however i am opposed to why it is still continuing. i think that in todays society there are way to many people that are overweight. national doughnut is not necessary because of that reason. why cant we have a national apple day or something? Also it still doesn’t hold its original meaning. Therefor its not a good holiday.

  43. jackietino Says:

Back when it started off for an actual good cause to it is something i\’d agree with, but now just people taking it too far and taking advantage of what it was is just not okay, it\’s unnecessary to make this a national holiday when much more can be happening for the world.

  44. Jessica Rossi Says:

i love donuts and all but why would they do that after people saying were all obese and everything..
