The Right to Forget?
In France, there is a law that is being proposed that would allow information about you online to be deleted. In the article, the law describes a law that would “force online and mobile firms to dispose of e-mails and text messages after an agreed length of time or on the request of the individual concerned.” The embarassing pictures and statements about you online could be erased? Sounds too good to be true. Remember this is in FRANCE not the United States. Everything is out there. What are you reactions to this proposed law? Do you want to see one like in the US.

I think this law is both good and bad. Good, because we do things that we wish we regret that tend to end up on the internet. Pictures, and things we say that people find out later on in our lives. Bad, because sometimes in situations like criminal investigation, our past that ends up on the internet is extremely helpful in solving cases. I wish the U.S. did have this, because personally I wish some of my things could be erased off the internet.

i think that this idea is good because embarrassing pictures and stories about you could go away from the internet and no one new could find out by accident. i believe this concept is fine because unacceptable things disappear and different people can’t know.

If people didnt do stupid things in the first place then they wouldnt have a problem, and wouldnt be embarrassed.

i think this is a great law. kids in this generation think they can trust anyone with embarrising pictures… but no one can. sometimes even what to be known as true friends will post mean, embarrising, and revealing things about you. i think that upon the writers request or the subject of the person should be able to erase the cyber space bullied comment . i think this law should be passed in the united states.

i have mixed feelings to this law. if there is something bad about you posted on the internet and all you care about is getting it removed then this law is good and i like it. however, if you are the one who posted something inappropriate and hurtful and then after the fact u realized it was wrong and wanted to remove it then i disagree with this law. i wouldn’t want this law in the US so i’m glad its all the way over in france

I think the law in France should be passed in US. I think people do write things on the Internet, text messages, and emails that they regret writing or regret sending. I think that it would be much better if the US passed that law, because it would only be the bussiness between those people and if one would like to delete they should be able to.

I don\’t think France should pass the Right to Forget Law because even though embarressing pictures or videos of you are online, it shows who you are. For example, there is two people fighting to get the one spot for a job, they all have equal credits. You want to check online to find out who would be the better worker in the long run. If you find something on one, say them at a party or something they\’ve done in the past or that they\’re lazy. You don\’t want someone like that working for you. Another example is that if someone gets arrested and they\’re being charged for something that they have done, the cops need to see if they\’ve done anything they can\’t just let it slide. Therefore i don\’t think France should pass the Right to Forget Law.

I don\\\\\\\’t think the passing of this law is a good idea for a community as a whole. For an individual, this law is a miraculous thing. I personally would want this law if i posted embarrassing pictures or writings of myself on the internet. But for a community as a whole, this could be very dangerous. When searching for jobs, background checks are done via internet to see if the person is fit for the job. How is an employer to know if what an individual has done in the past? I mean, if a school teacher posted something on the internet that was inappropriate or vulgar, they would lose their job immediately. This law means that people who have done awful things in the past can get jobs that don\\\\\\\’t reflect that. Hence, I do not agree with this law.

I think this should be passed in the U.S. Think about it like this, a young girl does something stupid because she thinks she\’s \

I think that law should be passed because people especially kids say and do stupid things all over the internet and im sure they regret doing those things. Kids would just want to delete whatever they said because they are remorseful and know they did something wrong so deserve to have whatever they did gone for good.

I think this is good because I think that the internet allows people to search too many things and find out too much information about people. A few weeks ago, my friend typed her name into Google, and was able to find her address, phone number, school picture, and field hockey jersey number on the first link that showed up. I think that it is very scary that people can access information like that, and even scarier that there is nothing we can do about it.

I think that being able to delete the things you don\’t want out there on the internet is a good idea. But then again people shouldn\’t have posted anything anywhere or sent things out if they were going to be embarrassed about it later on.

i think that it depends on what you did online could be erased. if you posted naked pictures on line then that is your own fault… of course the person who did it is going to say they messed up but my parents always taught me that whatever is online stays online. Nothing can be permantly erased. Even if it is erased to the public when you go to get a job they are going to check every online profile you ever had. i dont think france should pass this law because people are goign to take advantage of it and do whatever they want online just because they can delete it.

i think its good for a lot of young people who are still making big mistakes and some that end up all over the internet and out there for eveybody to see. on the other hand its good to have history in case any major problems happen and we need the information to figure out cases or settle arguements

i think this is a very smart idea. Theses companys should not be able to hold on to peoples personly online information. They do not have the write to any of it becuase it does not concern them. They should only be able to keep important thins that effect other people. Also people have done things that they regret and should not be judged on it.

I think law is good but also bad!!!! Good because many people in england could delete most of their mistakes!!!!!!! Bad because then the police can`t find evidence on someone if it has been deleted by a person who is computer savvy!!!!!! i think that france should not pass the law!!!!

i agree with this preposed law because a lot of things happen on the computer that you may not mean to be seen. accidents happen that dont actually mean anything and they should be able to be fixed.

Wow, well ever heard of digital footprints? Well- everyone makes bad decisions to what they put on the internet, it shouldn’t be deleted because they will be punished towards what they’ve done. Otherwise, there is a good part to this because if someone gets hurt, verbally, it could be deleted from the internet so that the mentally hurt person doesn’t have to see you.

I think that this is a very good idea. It allows people to get things about their personal life deleted, and it could be better for the person later on. This is a good because when people try to get jobs, then there are no bad things that are following them around, and its like a fresh start for someone that is trying to start all over. Sometimes the mistakes you make on the internet can come back to haunt you later on in life, so this law should definitely be passed.
June 7th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
I think this is a very well idea. because sometimes you just make a big mistake and need to delete it because you yourself have realized it was bad, or misleading and or inappropriate. I guess it depends on what has been sent out on the internet, like now.. there are many immature people who don’t realize the things they post aren’t gone, and they will most definitely regret it later. but also, it’s a good thing to have and no everything is still there if you need any proof of something like lets say a death threat, you will need the proof and even though the person has deleted it it’s still going to be there and help you out and fight your side of what happened.

i think that it depends on what you did online. . if you posted naked pictures online you shpuld be ready for all consequnces and problem to come. but it is your own fult and oyu cant blame anyone else. once you put that picture or post something online it stays there. you might earse it but its still therwe. i dont think france should pass the law because in my opinion people will just take advantage of it.
