25 Chicago Students Arrested for Food Fight
Arrested? For a Food Fight? You betcha! Read the article about the 25 MIDDLE SCHOOL aged students that were arrested following a food fight in Chicago. Was the punishment appropriate or excessive?

I think the punishment was excessive, because nobody was seriously injured, and they’re just middle schoolers. Even though once they turn 17 they’re record is clean, it was unnecessary to handcuff them, and treat them like they committed a serious crime. It was just a food fight.

i think that sending them to jail was a bit harsh. but most of them were 11 to 15 and i think hand cuffing them and scaring them a bit was a good idea. most of them will learn their lesson and wont do it again and besides this will all be gone when they turn 17 so their is nothing to be worried about.

i feel that the jail is lil extreme in the case of a food fight especially for middle school students like i feel like even now if i had to spend 8 hours in jail i dont know what i would do
February 2nd, 2010 at 9:33 pm
I think that it is very stupid to put midddle schoolers into jail for 8 hours for a food fight. There have been many food fights before this, why do they decide to throw people in jail for doing so now?
February 3rd, 2010 at 12:31 pm
this is the most rediculous reason to get arrested. i mean yea its dangerous because someone was hit in the head but being arrested was not necessary
February 3rd, 2010 at 1:22 pm
i dont think you should get arrested for a food fight maybe a detetion
February 3rd, 2010 at 3:14 pm
middle school aged kids arrested for a food fight? really? that is totally excessive. arresting someone for throwing a cookie, or an apple is insane. that is something you get suspended from school for, not arrested. these kids threw food, they didn’t shoot anybody or steal anything. they were taken to jail and had there mugshots taken as if they did something horrible. the teachers and police overreacted in a major way. i find it harder to believe that this happened the more i read this article. i wonder if this has happened before in this school and the administration was trying to make a point. however if this was a first time thing then the consequences just weren’t necessary.
February 3rd, 2010 at 6:08 pm
i think that the punishment was to harsh becuase there middle school kids. Yea kids and or adults could have gotten hurt but the cops were not needed in this situation. The 25 kids shouldnt have been arrested and all that went with being arrested becuase now that goes on their record and itl look bad. I think that the kids should have been suspened for a day maybe longer and sentanced to community service and to have to clean the whole cafe. Thats why i think that the 25 students getting arrested for a food fight wass to excessive.
February 3rd, 2010 at 6:43 pm
I think that arresting the students was way too far over the top. I think that a suspension for a few days would have been a more reasonable punishment.
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:12 pm
In my opinion i think that arresting 25 kids under 18 is a very bad decision. The kids are obviously not mature yet and didnt know better. They should of gave them a different punishment.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:57 pm
I think it\’s insane that they arrested children from as young as 11 years old. I don\’t think it was THAT big of a deal for a food fight, there\’s pleanty of food fights i think they should be part of every childs childhood and i don\’t think they should be punished as harshly as these 2 dozen children were.
February 4th, 2010 at 1:11 pm
I think the punishment was exsessive because they knew what the consequenses are what they are supposed to do. Granted, someone did start it and they just went with the flow, everyone would. I think the students should have just gotten at least a detention or an ISS to the most out of school detention. I don\’t think that they should be that badly punished due to a food fight. I think it would be better if they learned their lesson but didn\’t have to get arressed for that.
February 4th, 2010 at 2:35 pm
i think this is so stupid to get arrested over. its not a crime. yes it should be disciplined but not that serious of consequences. yea they were wrong to do it and she get suspended but to get that on the record for a food fight…
February 5th, 2010 at 11:09 am
I think that is outragoues, kids should not be arested for a food fight. They deserve punishment, but getting arested is just a little too much. Having a food fight is not a crime. I think the police and school were just a little bit too strict.
February 10th, 2010 at 1:16 pm
i think this punishment was excessive. i think it is excessive because nobody was seriously injured. Yeah a kid got hit in the head but it isnt like he died. The police treated these kids (as young as 11) like they actually killed someone or committed a serious crime. even though they were in a jail cell for 8 hours, if it was me i have no idea what i would do.
February 11th, 2010 at 3:04 pm
Thats insane. . How could somthing so miniscule be treated like a crime. This could cause seriouse phsycological problems in a young person. I think thats horrible
February 11th, 2010 at 7:32 pm
That is not cool thats ridicoulus cuz they took random kids even if they were innocent. That could have alot of impact on the people who went to jail and for the people who started it feel guilty.
February 14th, 2010 at 2:30 pm
i dont think that ist is apropriate that students were arrested for throwing foo no one was severely injured in the process and the maximum punishment should be suspention and the school should have been able to handle it without involving the authorities
March 11th, 2010 at 7:00 pm
I think the punishment was uncalled for. It was a food fight not a physical fight, no way was really hurt. Kids that are 11 years old should be getting arrested for a food fight at all. They should have been given a iss or detention.
March 18th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
I think it\’s terrible. These kids were merely having a little fun, it\’s called Spring Fever. When the enitre seventh grade lunch room joined in singing \
March 22nd, 2010 at 5:56 pm
i think that was a really stupid thing that 25 kids were arrested for just a food fight. it was unesesery because it didnt solve anything by putting them in jail for that i think detion or iss would have been better.
April 6th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
Of course the kids should get into trouble. That’s a given. Yet, to go to jail for it? That’s a bit ridiculous. I could understand how the school would want to teach a no tolerance rule but jail is a little much.
April 15th, 2010 at 8:08 pm
i think that arresting them was wayyy to far. I know it wasnt the smartest thing they could have done but suspention would have done. They could have done soo many other worse things
April 15th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
hey vinny! ^ Anyways, I think it’s really stupid that the students are being arrested and charged for taking part in a food fight. These students are being put through so much unnecessary stress and will have a criminal record for the rest of their lives for really no reason. Being part of a food fight is not a crime, and the punishment shouldn’t be taken to the extreme of being arrested.
April 16th, 2010 at 12:45 pm
I think that was ridiculous. There was no need for them to get arrested. No was was seriously hurt. The school went overboard with their punishments.
April 18th, 2010 at 8:38 am
i think this is crazy… these kids were only having a good time and i think being arrested for a little mess is a little overboard. i agree they should have gotten introuble by the school … they should hav e never involved the cops in such a silly mistake .
April 18th, 2010 at 7:37 pm
i think that picking out a group of kids to do something crazy like send to jail is too much for a food fight. if you\’re going to punish them u might as well do it to the whole cafeteria, instead of picking a few to arrest. yea itll scare them out of doing it again but its harmless i dont think it was worth all that
April 18th, 2010 at 10:41 pm
kids should be arrested for bringing guns to school not throwing food at eachother, and why didnt they just go to juvenile delinquent or whatever its called jail is just a little too far. they should get detention and maybe suspension at the most not jail come-on go catch bank robbers not kids having a food fight.
April 19th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
I honestly think that what the kids did was bad. They do deserve a punishment, but get arrested for a food fight ? they obviously over reacted with the punishment. They are middle school kids, that are obviously not mature enough to stop themselfs from starting a food fight.. but in the end they are still kids and if someone starts it the rest of the kids in the cafeteria are going to join in and go along with it.
April 21st, 2010 at 7:28 pm
This is honestly the most ridiculous article i’ve ever read. Why would a school throw their students into jail for a food fight.. to get attention from press & stuff? I think that suspending them was quite enough. I know if I ever got into a food fight, i would learn my lesson from being suspended.
April 22nd, 2010 at 11:37 pm
Arresting children in middle school for a food fight is ridiculous. I think that the school, and the police took this too far, and arresting the kids was over-exaggerated. There have been many food fights before, and I don’t think that anyone could of gotten seriously injured. This situation was taken farther than it should of been.
May 3rd, 2010 at 12:37 pm
The punishment of the food fight was unnecessary and excessive. A two to 5 day suspension would of been enough to teach the kids a lesson, but putting middle schoolers in prison and having them go to court for a food fight is ridiculous. And how would they even know they got the right kids who started it and not innocent ones? I can see the school trying to set an example for future problems but they need to take calm down.
May 13th, 2010 at 5:05 pm
I agree with pretty much everyone who commented on this article. i agree with them because it is way far fetched that kids should be jailed for throwing food… if no one was hurt or anything dangerous happened the worst that should of happened was suspension.
May 13th, 2010 at 5:57 pm
that is so stupid. Middle school students arrested for a food fight? there just kids they dont know any better. Obviously they deserved a punishment but that was way to harsh. very poor judgement on their part.
May 18th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
Honestly? No student should be arrested for throwing food at eachother in school. If no one was seriously injured, the punishment should just be to clean it up, not have a criminal record for the rest of their lives.
May 27th, 2010 at 11:05 am
the police who put these kids in jail should be ashamed. How can you through an 11 year old kid into jail for throughing an apple. The kids should of gotten a detention or something. if i was one of these kids parents i would be pissed of with the school
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:17 am
I think that just because there was a food fight does not mean that the kids should get arrested. There are much worse things that children have done, that they didnt get charge with. This article is ridiculous and very over reacted, and dramatic. A food fight is harmless, and there is no point to arrest the children for having one.
June 7th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
I believe that they should of got a punishment not as harsh as going to jail. Putting kids in jail from the ages of 11-15 is a bit ridiculous, maybe a suspension. They didn’t deserve that its just a food fight , i know that’s a rule in most schools but bring the kids to jail is just way to much.
June 7th, 2010 at 2:55 pm
i think that for a food fight they should have had to clean it up not be sent to jail. the school should of tried to handle the fight before having the kids arrested. it says something about the school, the police. Do they think its the same as bringing a gun to school?, threatening someone? Physically fighting? if kids don` t go to jail for physical fighting why make them go to jail for food fighting?????
June 7th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
Reading that article made me very mad. Arresting students for having one food fight? It\\\’s not that big of a deal. Only suspending them for a few days would be enough and you tell them if it happens again the consequences will be much worse. Nobody deserved to be arrested and the fact it was only some people and not everybody involved in it wether they started it or not, it just ridiculous.
June 7th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
This is absolutly rediculous. Being arrested for starting a food fight in middle school is having the situation being blown way out of proportion. I could see giving a kid detension or a day or two of suspension at the most for something like this but not having the police involved.
June 7th, 2010 at 10:30 pm
i think this is stupid how they would throw kids into jail for having a food fight the most they should get is detention or something. there was no serious damage or injuries.
June 12th, 2010 at 10:03 pm
I think that this school handled this situation very badly. I think they blew it way out of hand and i don\’t think there was any need for these kids to be arrested, their just young kids that didn\’t know better. The punishment for a food fight should be a detention or maybe even being suspended but being put in jail for a day is just insane. Since some of the kids were young this could effect them later in life and it should have been dealt with in a different way. I don\’t agree with the school did and if it was me i would never think being arrested was a fair punishment for having a little food fight.
June 14th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
I think it is stupid to through kids int prison for throughing food.if i was one of the parents i would be pissed of with the schootly be al. There should definetly be a punishment for getting in a food fight but this is way to severe
June 17th, 2010 at 10:08 pm
I think that how the school handled the food fight was just out of control. I don’t think that its fair that just because these kids had a food fight that they were arrested. The kids should have just gotten a detention or maybe even a suspension but being arrested its just blowing it way out of hand. I think that these kids could be affected from this experience later in life and i just don’t think that it was fair that they got arrested just for pulling a little stunt like a food fight. I think the school could of handled it in a muchh better way.
