Our Tree in Autumn

Our tree this year is a "Prunus Cerasifera" or Purpleleaf
Plum tree. It does not produce fruit. It has very dark burgandy leaves.
The tree gives us shade on hot days and is a nice, quiet place to read
in the early afternoon. It is a happy place for many.
We chose this tree because it is special to our school. It is a memorial
tree planted in memory of a student who passed away a few years ago.
She was very ill most of her life and one day just couldn't breathe
any more. Everyone misses her but we know she is safe and happy now.
Her tree is a reminder of the good times she had at our school.
Recently, there was a terrible forest fire very near our school, about
10 miles away. The smoke from the fire made it difficult to see as well
as breathe. We had many days of indoor recesses because of the smoke.
It took several weeks to put the fire out. There was even a neighborhood
nearby that had to evacuate! In the end our school and our tree were
safe because of the awesome firefighters we have in our forested, foothill
town.
