Suggestions for Mrs. Burris' Chemistry Class
You must have Mrs. Burris' Permission before

home

Each of these suggestions can be used to earn extra credit 2nd, 3rd or 4th quarter. You can only do each project once. Some projects may not be appropriate until certain material is covered in class. Use your best judgment as to whether or not you are ready to take on an assignment. You can only do one project per quarter. The project can earn between 1 and 2 extra credit points. These are added directly to your quarter average. Extra credit will not be accepted if you are missing any assignments for the quarter.

Write and illustrate a children's story where you personify an atom or a molecule and follow it through its travels. This atom/molecule should illustrate a chemistry principle from this list:
1) Phase change (including solid, liquid and gas)
2) Bonding (atoms becoming molecules...illustrate the difference between covalent and ionic)
3) Solubility (dissolve something and then recover it in it's original form)
4) Gas Laws (experience changes in pressure and temperature to result in different volumes)
5) Types of reactions (take us through synthesis, decomposition, single and double replacement)
*NOTE: do not use the same story I use in class
If you would like to cover a topic other than what's on this list Please see me first. This project can be done more than once but the topic must be different each time.

1. Print out the article
2. Read the article.
3. Highlight and annotate as needed throughout the article to help you find the main idea and key concepts. Put notes in the margins in order to define terms that you don't understand or need to clarify.
4. Write a one page (double spaced) summary and explanation of the article making as many ties to what you have learned in class as possible.
