Chemistry is a class taught not for the specific knowledge it imparts but for the problem solving skills it develops.

Topics Include:

Ø Matter & Energy Ø Kinetics & Equilibrium
Ø Periodic Table Ø REDOX
Ø Stoichiometry Ø Organic
Ø Gases & Solutions Ø Nuclear Chemistry
Ø Acids & Base  

Class Meetings:

Ø Lecture period every day
Ø Lab period twice every 6 days

Regents Exam:

Ø Students MUST take the regents exam in order to receive credit for this course.
Ø The exam counts as 1/5 of the final average for the class.

Required Supplies:

Ø 3-Ring Binder
Ø Loose leaf paper
Ø Pen/Pencil
Ø Scientific or four function calculator (graphing calculators are not allowed by NYSED)

Classroom Rules:

Ø Be on time.
Ø If late, have a pass.
Ø Be prepared.
Ø Homework must be done on time.
Ø Show respect, No cursing (25¢).
Ø Don’t leave class without a pass.
Ø No Cafeteria during or between classes
Ø Lab work missed due to legal absence must be made up within 5 school days.
Ø If legally absent only the day of a test, test must be made up the day you return.
Ø A timetable for work missed during an extended absence will be decided upon the students return.
Ø Work missed for an illegal absence will be given a zero.
Ø NO Cell Phones/Camera Phones/MP3 Players/Video Games etc. allowed in class at ANYTIME

Laboratory Reports:

Ø ALL labs must be correctly completed in order to take the regents exam.
Ø A failing lab MUST be corrected to a grade of 65 within the quarter it was assigned.
Ø Labs missed due to illegal absence must be made up, though an official grade of zero will be recorded.
Ø Labs from previous quarters must be made up although the official grade won’t change.

Grading Policy:

Ø Tests = 60%
Follow the regents’ format
Ø Labs = 20%
Must be completed to take regents exam
Ø Quizzes = 15%
Usually announced, but can be given any time
Ø Homework = 5%
Doing homework diligently will increase test performance & some assignments count as a take home quiz.
