Lakeland has always had a history of protecting and serving our country. From Vietnam to the Gulf War, young men and women have left the hallways of Lakeland High School to join the armed forces. The present War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom are no exception. Many of our students have entered the various military academies of our nation.
In the fall of 2003, to honor these young men and women, the Lakeland High School Leadership Classes with the help of their teacher Debra Hauser, Mr. John Walker at Lakeland Copper Beech and the Class of 2004, hand painted over 40 hearts with these women and men’s names. Since the start of the project, over 60 names have been collected. Half of them have been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, or other countries that could be considered part of the war zone. They are posted along East Main Street in Shrub Oak, NY.
Each graduate of Lakeland High School that is presently serving in the military has a heart posted. The name appears as it was when they were a student. It is followed by the year they graduated from Lakeland and the branch of the military in which they are serving. A yellow background notates someone in combat.
Some original hearts have been damaged by weather and are in the process of being replaced. Their original pictures remain. Mrs. Maureen O'Donnell collects the names of the servicemen and women maintains both the hearts and the web site.
