INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH:

· Introduce your controlling idea, based on your task box. This may take one to several sentences. You need to take the broad topic given (like reaching beyond oneself) and make it more specific. Preferably try to find something the two pieces have in common regarding this topic (or something they say that is opposite one another regarding this topic). This is what you will try to prove in your essay.
· Introduce both works with authors in the order you’ll address them. You may refer to them as Passage I and Passage II, but you must include the genre of each work (provided in directions section) and the writers.
· State that both writers use literary elements to deliver their controlling idea. You may preview the specific literary elements you’ll discuss for each work here, but do so in the order you'll address them in essay.

BODY PARAGRAPH 1:

· Address Passage I. Identify how this work proves the controlling idea that you have specified in your introduction.
· Show how the writer uses AT LEAST TWO literary elements to help convey the controlling idea above.
· Use AT LEAST TWO quotes from the work to show the controlling idea.

BODY PARAGRAPH 2:

· Use a transition here and then address Passage II. Identify how this work ALSO proves the controlling idea that you have specified in your intro.
· Show how the writer uses AT LEAST TWO literary elements to help convey the controlling idea above.
· Use AT LEAST TWO quotes from the work to show the controlling idea.

CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH:

· Rephrase your controlling idea from introduction in different words.
· State that both passages prove this controlling idea, re-mentioning genre and author of each work.
· Mention that both writers integrate literary elements into works, which help indicate the controlling idea.
· Take your controlling idea and make a broad statement about life/society.
