The
California flag has a white background with a red stripe along
the bottom. The words “California Republic” appear
on the white field. These words mean that the first pioneers
who settled in California called it their own Republic. There
is also a picture of a grizzly bear standing on grass. There
were many grizzly bears in California, but they are now extinct.
The bear is a symbol of courage and strength. This is important
in the state of California because William Todd, a pioneer
painted it on a white cloth in 1846. Unfortunately it was ruined
in an earthquake, but later, it was remade into what it is
today. There is also a picture of a star. This is a symbol
of the California Lone Star. This is important to the state
of California because it is a symbol of the pioneers’ independent
attitude. The California flag was adopted in 1911.
