The Hawaii quarter was the 50th state quarter to be released by the U.S. Mint. Hawaii became a state on August 21, and the Hawaii quarter was the 5th one to be released in the year 2008. The design of this quarter was chosen by Governor Linda Lingle after the citizens of Hawaii voted on five different designs. On the state quarter of Hawaii you will see a picture of King Kamehameha I. He is important in the state of Hawaii because in the 1800’s King Kamehameha I unified all of the governments of the Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom. So the Hawaiian people wanted to honor him.

You will also see outlines of the Hawaii Islands. It is important in the state of Hawaii because Hawaii is actually a chain of hundreds of islands in the Pacific Ocean. You will also see the words "UA MAU KE EA O KA ‘AINA I KA PONO" written on the quarter. These words mean, “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.” That is the state motto. These words were spoken by Queen Ke’opuolani in 1825 when she was baptized as a Christian.
