The West Virginia quarter was the 35th state quarter to be released by the U.S. Mint. West Virginia became a state on June 25, 1863, and the West Virginia quarter was the fifth one to be released in the year 2005. Bob Wise and the U.S. Treasury chose the design of this quarter. 1,800 designs were submitted and one of the five finalists was selected. On the state quarter of West Virginia you will see the New River Gorge shown under the New River Gorge Bridge. It is important in the state of West Virginia because of its natural beauty and great engineering. The New River Gorge Bridge is the second highest bridge in the United States.
