Next, they heat the blanks in an annealing furnace to make them soft. The coins are heated and cooled to make them less brittle. Cooling down the blanks is the next step.  Then they get washed and cleaned, so they are very shiny, and dried off.  Even coins have to take baths!




Then the blanks are sent through a machine called a riddler.  Its job is to separate the blanks into two categories;  "good" and" bad."  The blanks in the "good" category are sent to the upsetting mill.  It raises the rim on both sides of each blank.
